Dr. Gary's Best Breed dog food takes a holistic approach to manufacturing their products. Their primary pitch is that not all foods are created equal and even though some of their competitors may look like they're using the best ingredients, they are not.

Behind the Brand

The story of Best Breed started like many others, with a pet owner and their pets. Dr. Gary is a practicing Veterinarian who observed many dogs and knew that their health could improve by changing their diet. He noticed things like digestive issues, mobility challenges, and skin problems.

Dr. Gary calls his food "common sense nutrition" meaning they disregard traditional marketing and cost control techniques that some of the mass manufacturers do. Instead, Best Breed does what comes naturally to them; they produce high-quality food that they know is great for your dog.

Everything gets prepared slowly and in small batches to preserve the vitamins and nutrients. During the baking process of kibble, a lot of vitamins get lost because large companies mass produce their food and bake it at such a high temperature that it sucks the life right out of it. Best Breed stands to never operate in such a way.

For example, their Grain-Free Chicken with vegetable recipe has 37 reviews with 4.9 out of 5 being their average rating. The food has only one negative review, and it's still only three stars. Much of their foods have similar ratings, so that says a lot about the quality of Dr. Gary's Best Breed.

I was given a sample of this dog food by the kennel where l board my two dogs. I have a 14 yr. Old with serious joint issues in her hips and back legs. I only feed my dog food that has the highest quality ingredients and the most nutritional value, and after Acana and Orijen's recent lawsuit I thought there was no healthy option left until I found this.

Didn't work for my dog

My dog is very sensitive and often has diarrhea or eats dirt if the food does not agree with them. While they ate it did not help with either problem – Chewy Customer

Switched brands (large breed food)

I switched brands at the recommendation of my dog's breeder & the fact that my dog (German Shepherd) has issues with ear infections & itchy skin. My dog likes the food well enough, but it doesn't seem to make a difference with his skin or ear issues.

Why does Best Breed only use small kibbles even in large breed formula?

Most dogs are not natural masticators, meaning they do not mash their food up before swallowing. Typically dogs take one or two bites then swallow, so a lot of kibbles go into the stomach whole. We believe that the small kibbles are much easier to digest than large kibbles as they have more surface area in relation to weight. In addition, the small kibble allows for the formation of a tighter mass of food, which may help reduce air pockets in the stomach.

Why does the color of Best Breed kibbles change from one bag to another?

The company uses 100% natural ingredients and therefore do not use any artificial colors. The change in kibble color is coming from differences in the natural ingredients being used. This variation in color does not impact the nutritional integrity of the food.

What to do to enhance the flavor of dry kibble?

We recommend adding a little bit of warm water to the kibble and let it soak for a few minutes. Microwaving the kibble in water is another option. Doing this helps bring out the natural flavors in the food.

How should I transition my pet to Best Breed?

While we almost never hear of a dog or cat experiencing issues switching to this food brand, we do recommend a slow transition over the course of 10 or so days just to be safe. Start out by feeding 25% Best Breed the first three days 50% the next four days and 75% the remaining three days. If you do not have enough of the old food left to do a full 10 days, just shorten the duration down to whatever you can do.
